WA Department of Health Approval — A Regulatory Requirement

All products used for leach drains must be approved for use by the Chief Health Officer under the Health (Treatment of Sewage and Disposal of Effluent and Liquid Waste) Regulations 1974. Approval is product-specific.

Both the Versitank and the Drainwell are listed by name on that register.

Every primary treatment system installed in WA since 1990 requires two separate leach drain runs plus an alternating device — one drain rests while the other operates, preventing premature soil clogging. Run lengths below are per run. Orders must cover both runs.

Both products are fully modular — Versitank at 0.55m per unit, Drainwell at 0.72m — allowing the exact number of modules to be ordered without cutting or waste.

Minimum setback requirements for council application: 1.8m from buildings and boundaries; 1.2m of free-draining soil below the base of the drain. Local council Environmental Health Officer approval is required prior to commencement of works.

Common Questions

Are the Versitank and Drainwell approved for use in WA?

Yes. Both the Versitank and the Drainwell are listed by name on the WA Department of Health approved plastic leach drain register under the Health (Treatment of Sewage and Disposal of Effluent and Liquid Waste) Regulations 1974. Approval is product-specific. Confirm the exact product name is on the register before quoting a job. The approval certificate is available for download on this page.

Are two leach drain runs required?

Yes. Every primary treatment system installed in WA since 1990 requires two separate runs with an alternating device — one run rests while the other operates, preventing premature soil clogging. Use the sizing calculator above to determine the required number of modules per run.

Is geotextile fabric required?

Yes. WA regulations require geotextile wrapping to prevent fine sand migration into the modules. Geofabric is included with every order at no additional cost.

How do polypropylene modules perform in Perth’s acidic sands?

Both the Versitank and Drainwell are polypropylene — chemically inert and unaffected by acid soils. Concrete degrades in acidic conditions over the service life of the system, including in Bassendean sands and acid sulfate soil zones common across the Perth coastal plain.

What are the minimum setback requirements?

Minimum 1.8m from buildings and boundaries, with 1.2m of free-draining soil below the base of the drain. Local council Environmental Health Officer approval is required prior to commencement of works.

What is the lead time for stock?

Both products are held as stock items at our Perth warehouse. Same-day pickup is available, or courier to site. There are no made-to-order lead times.

Is volume pricing available?

Yes. Volume discounts apply from 10 units.

What types of projects are leach drains used on?

Primarily residential — new builds and replacement of failed concrete systems. Both products are also suited to residential subdivisions and commercial projects where a WA Department of Health approved effluent disposal system is required. Contact us to discuss volume requirements for larger developments.
